Dear Parents,

As another term draws to a close, and we say goodbye to the year 2025, I want to thank you for all your support since September. We have had many new families joining us and I hope that your children have enjoyed their time at their new school, taking advantage of all Swans has to offer. There has been a lot going on, which I will do my best to summarise in this letter!

Christmas Fayre

We enjoyed another seasonal get-together last Friday at our annual Christmas Fayre, with lovely music, delicious food (carefully prepared by our amazing kitchen staff) and lots of fun for the little ones. It is a great opportunity for the whole community to come together; staff, students and parents, and is one of my highlights of the year. Thank you for attending and supporting us; it was lovely hearing your positive comments and thanks. A big thank you goes to Maria Maganto for her meticulous preparation for the event, and to Mr Tim Pritchard and Mr Daniel Verry for organising all the secondary bands and singers. School Show - The Band

As I write, we are gearing up for our flagship event of the year, our School Show ‘The Band’, which will take place at the Palacio de Congresos. The hours that the team and the cast put into making this show what it is are just staggering, and I am certain that this one will be better than ever.

Racing Car - Swans GP

STEM work at Swans continues to thrive, and we had great news from a recent race that we entered in Cartagena. Dr Darren, Mr Fletcher and the team of students have been fine-tuning our vehicle since September, and we ran out with a 3rd and 4th place in the races, which involved us competing against university teams (and beating many of them!) What is so brilliant is that many of the ideas for improvements have been driven by the students, who play such an active role in this project. Hopefully, you have seen the car in our reception area, showing what a truly inspirational activity this has been.

Costa Schools Debate Competition

Once again, Swans hosted the annual Costa Debate competition in November, inviting ten schools (including a school from Madrid) to take part. It was an intense day, brilliantly organised by Mr Josh Harper and Miss Dana, and the other schools were really appreciative of our efforts to provide the opportunity. After some heated debates, with topics such as ‘the role of religion in society’ and ‘should humans be allowed to sell their organs’, it came down to the final, where Swans were crowned the winners, narrowly defeating EIC. Aside from a deserved victory, I was even prouder of the fact that the event was led by our students, guiding the teams from other schools, judging debates and organising the logistics of the day. They did us proud!

Trip to Munich and Vienna

I was lucky enough to attend another successful history trip to Munich and Vienna, with students from Years 10 to 13. Expertly organised by Mr Phil Newton, we got to learn about the origins of the Nazis, with some interesting guided tours and museums. We visited the Dachau Concentration Camp and even got to see the car in which Archduke Franz Ferdinand was shot, which was the spark of World War 1. Forty students attended and they showed a real interest in the exhibits and had a great time, plus we enjoyed some Christmas markets to lighten the mood in the evening!

Courtyard Music Sessions

Our superb music department added another event to our calendar this term by organising a concert for select bands throughout the school. Originally planned for the courtyard, the weather defeated us and we had to bring Glastonbury indoors to the theatre, but it still went really well, displaying talent from across the school. It highlights the willingness of our students to perform, and the amazing inspiration that Mr Tim and Mr Daniel Verry give them to facilitate this. All who attended had a great time and it will hopefully inspire more students in the future.

Mathletics Competition

We had wonderful news from our young mathematicians in Key Stage 3, who won the best overall school award in a Maths competition held at Aloha College for schools along the coast. First prizes were won in Year 7, 8 and 9, and we gained another trophy for our cabinet, so congratulations to the students and, of course, Miss Karen Bradburn and her department for their excellent work.

Mock exams / Universities

When we return, the Year 11 and 13 students have their Mock Exams, so they will be revising in between turkey and chocolate breaks this Christmas. We wish them all the best and know they will do us proud. There is a lot at stake for our Year 13s, who have already received some fantastic university offers, including interviews at Oxford, Cambridge and Imperial College, London, so exciting times lie ahead.

These are just a few things that have happened in the past two months, but I could go on. I am often asked by new parents interested in Swans about what kind of school we are and what our area of focus is. I always respond by saying that we do everything. We are immensely proud of our academic record, but we will not sideline artistic subjects (as I hear that some schools are now doing), because we know that each child has their own interests and ambitions and we feel it is our job to support that. What really helps, is having a set of teachers who are so dedicated to the promotion of their subjects and the willingness to provide opportunities, and for that I feel very grateful.

Estimados Padres,

A medida que otro trimestre llega a su fin y nos despedimos del año 2025, quiero agradecerles todo su apoyo desde el mes de septiembre. Hemos dado la bienvenida a muchas familias nuevas y espero que sus hijos e hijas hayan disfrutado de su tiempo en su nuevo colegio, aprovechando todo lo que Swans tiene para ofrecer. Han sido meses muy intensos, y en esta carta intentaré resumir los aspectos más destacados.

Feria de navidad

El pasado viernes disfrutamos de otro encuentro navideño en nuestra tradicional Feria de Navidad, en el que hubo música encantadora, comida deliciosa cuidadosamente preparada por nuestro magnífico personal de cocina y muchas actividades para el disfrute de los más pequeños. Es una excelente oportunidad para que toda la comunidad educativa —profesorado, personal, alumnado y familias— se reúna, y constituye uno de los momentos más destacados del año para mí. Gracias por acompañarnos y por su apoyo; fue un placer escuchar sus comentarios positivos y su agradecimiento. Quiero expresar un agradecimiento especial a María Maganto por su meticulosa preparación del evento, así como a Mr Tim Pritchard y Mr Daniel Verry por la organización de todas las bandas de música y cantantes de Secundaria.

School Show (Espectáculo del colegio) The Band

Mientras escribo estas líneas, estamos ultimando los preparativos de nuestro evento más emblemático del año, el espectáculo “The Band”, que tendrá lugar en el Palacio de Congresos. Las horas de trabajo y dedicación que el equipo y el elenco han invertido para hacer de este espectáculo resulta realmente impresionante, y estoy convencido de que esta edición será mejor que nunca.

Racing Car (Carrera) - Swans GP

El trabajo en el ámbito STEM en Swans continúa desarrollándose de manera excelente, y recientemente recibimos muy buenas noticias tras una competición en la que participamos en Cartagena. Mr Darren, Mr Fletcher y el equipo de estudiantes han estado perfeccionando nuestro vehículo desde el mes de septiembre, y logramos obtener un tercer y un cuarto puesto en las carreras, compitiendo contra equipos universitarios (¡y superando a muchos de ellos!). Lo más destacable es que muchas de las ideas de mejora han surgido del propio alumnado, que desempeña un papel muy activo en este proyecto. Esperamos que hayan podido ver el coche expuesto en la zona de recepción, como muestra de lo verdaderamente inspiradora que ha sido esta actividad.

Competición de Debate Costa Schools

Una vez más, Swans fue la sede del Costa Debate, celebrado en noviembre, al que se invitó a participar a diez centros educativos (entre ellos, un colegio de Madrid). Fue una jornada intensa, magníficamente organizada por Mr Josh Harper y Miss Dana, y los centros participantes valoraron muy positivamente el esfuerzo realizado para ofrecer esta oportunidad. Tras debates muy animados, con temas como «el papel de la religión en la sociedad» o «si los seres humanos deberían poder vender sus órganos», se llegó a la final, en la que Swans se proclamó ganador, imponiéndose por un estrecho margen a EIC. Más allá de esta merecida victoria, me sentí especialmente orgulloso de que el evento estuviera liderado por nuestro propio alumnado, que se encargó de guiar a los equipos de otros centros, juzgar los debates y organizar la logística de la jornada. ¡Nos hicieron sentir muy orgullosos!

Viaje a Múnich y Viena

Tuve la suerte de participar en otro exitoso viaje de Historia a Múnich y Viena con alumnado de Year 10 a Year 13. El viaje, magníficamente organizado por Mr Phil Newton, nos permitió conocer los orígenes del nazismo a través de interesantes visitas guiadas y museos. Visitamos el campo de concentración de Dachau y también pudimos ver el coche en el que fue asesinado el archiduque Francisco Fernando, hecho que desencadenó la Primera Guerra Mundial. Participaron cuarenta estudiantes, que mostraron un gran interés por las exposiciones y disfrutaron mucho de la experiencia. Además, por las tardes visitamos algunos mercados navideños, que ayudaron a crear un ambiente más distendido.

Sesiones de música en el patio

Nuestro excelente departamento de Música añadió este trimestre una nueva actividad a nuestro calendario al organizar un concierto con una selección de bandas de todo el colegio. Aunque en un principio estaba previsto celebrarlo en el patio del colegio, las condiciones meteorológicas nos obligaron a trasladar nuestro particular Glastonbury al teatro, donde el evento resultó igualmente muy exitoso y permitió mostrar el talento del alumnado de todas las etapas. Este concierto pone de manifiesto la disposición de nuestros estudiantes para actuar en público y la magnífica labor de inspiración que realizan Mr Tim y Mr Daniel Verry para hacerlo posible. Todas las personas asistentes lo disfrutaron mucho y confiamos en que sirva para animar a más estudiantes a participar en el futuro.

Competición de Matemáticas

Recibimos una noticia magnífica por parte de nuestro joven alumnado de Matemáticas de Key Stage 3, que obtuvo el premio al mejor centro en conjunto en una competición celebrada en Aloha College, en la que participaron colegios de toda la costa. Se consiguieron primeros premios en Year 7, 8 y 9, y sumamos así un nuevo trofeo a nuestras vitrinas. Enhorabuena al alumnado y, por supuesto, a Miss Karen Bradburn y a su departamento por su excelente trabajo.

Exámenes simulados / Universidades

Al regresar, los estudiantes de Year 11 y Year 13 tendrán sus exámenes simulados (mock exams), por lo que estarán repasando entre los descansos de pavo y chocolate durante estas Navidades. Les deseamos todo lo mejor, mucha suerte y estamos seguros de que nos harán sentir muy orgullosos. Hay mucho en juego para nuestros alumnos de Year 13, quienes ya han recibido ofertas universitarias excepcionales, incluyendo entrevistas en Oxford, Cambridge e Imperial College de Londres, así que les esperan tiempos muy emocionantes.

Estas son solo algunas de las actividades que han tenido lugar en los últimos dos meses, pero podría seguir hablando de muchas más. A menudo me preguntan los padres nuevos interesados en Swans sobre qué tipo de colegio somos y cuál es nuestro enfoque principal. Siempre respondo que hacemos de todo. Estamos muy orgullosos de nuestros resultados académicos, pero no dejamos de lado las materias artísticas (como he oído que hacen algunos colegios hoy en día), porque sabemos que cada alumno y alumna tiene sus propios intereses y aspiraciones. Lo que realmente marca la diferencia es contar con un equipo de docentes tan comprometido con la promoción de sus asignaturas y con la disposición de ofrecer oportunidades, y por ello me siento muy agradecido. Les deseo una fantástica Navidad, que disfruten de tiempo con sus familias, y espero volver a verles el jueves 8 de enero. ¡Feliz Navidad!
