Dear Parents,

As always, the first half term has flown by and we are all looking forward to a well-earned break. Our Heads of Year recently called for feedback from our new families and it is lovely to hear how well our new entrants have settled in and are already playing a big role in our school. In this post, I would like to reflect on a few of the great things that have been happening at Swans.

IE Model United Nations conference (MUN)

A group of students from Years 10 and 11 have just returned from a Model United Nations conference hosted by IE University in Madrid. This is a unique opportunity for them to debate and propose solutions for problems that affect our world, and gives them an insight into politics. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be taking part in more debate competitions throughout the year. We encourage all students to join the after-school clubs and develop some new skills in public speaking.

World School Games (Barcelona)

Our PE department took a group of students from Years 7-9 to the World School Games football event in Barcelona, and again they performed admirably, with boys and girls teams getting to the latter stages of the tournament, playing schools from all over the world. Despite narrowly losing in the semi-finals, our teams represented the school brilliantly and the standard of football was very high, with the boys even beating a team from Malta that contains a selection of the best footballers from multiple schools. As I write, the department is preparing to head off on the Mediterranean Cup in Verona, Italy, with teams from Years 10 and 11, so I hope to bring you some good news when we return.

University Applications

Our Year 13 students are now preparing their applications to a variety of universities around the world, including Spain, the UK, the Netherlands and the US, to name but a few. Our new University and Careers Counsellor, Miss Danielle, is busy guiding the students in their choices and helping them construct effective Personal Statements. It is an exciting time, especially as four of our students are applying to Oxford and Cambridge, so we are looking forward to hearing some wonderful offers coming through soon.

Christmas Show

I have been fortunate enough to attend some of the after-school rehearsals for our Christmas show, and it is really taking shape. Miss Kate, Mr Tim and their team are working tirelessly (including running weekend sessions) to make it as spectacular as always, and it is lovely to see students from Year 6 to Year 13, including a good number of our new students, working together and thoroughly enjoying the experience. We will give news about tickets and further details when we return.

Talent Show

Our half-term will end with our annual Talent Show, which is a great way to bring in the October break, with students showing off their talents in singing, playing instruments and dancing to their peers. It has been fully organised by the students in Year 12 as part of their IB CAS projects, so congratulations to them for their efforts in putting it together.

I hope that you all have a lovely week off and the students all get to have a little breather before the run-in to Christmas. I often say that this term is where all the hard work happens, and I am pleased to see that the students have responded well to the new year with Positivity, Proactivity and Pride.

Estimado Padres:

Como siempre, este primer trimestre ha pasado volando y todos estamos deseando disfrutar de un merecido descanso. Nuestros Jefes de Año han pedido recientemente la opinión de las nuevas familias, y es un placer escuchar lo bien que se han adaptado nuestros nuevos alumnos y cómo ya están desempeñando un papel importante en nuestra comunidad escolar. En esta carta me gustaría destacar algunas de las cosas maravillosas que han ocurrido en Swans.

Conferencia del Modelo de las Naciones Unidas (MUN) de IE

Un grupo de alumnos de Year 10 y Year 11 acaba de regresar de una conferencia Modelo de Naciones Unidas organizada por la Universidad IE en Madrid. Esta es una oportunidad única para debatir y proponer soluciones a problemas que afectan a nuestro mundo, además de ofrecerles una visión más profunda de la política internacional. Nuestros estudiantes disfrutaron mucho de la experiencia y participarán en más competiciones de debate a lo largo del curso. Animamos a todos los alumnos a unirse a los clubes extraescolares y desarrollar nuevas habilidades en oratoria y expresión pública.

World School Games (Barcelona)

Nuestro departamento de Educación Física llevó a un grupo de estudiantes de Year 7 a Year 9 al evento de fútbol World School Games en Barcelona, donde, una vez más, realizaron una actuación admirable. Los equipos masculino y femenino llegaron a las fases finales del torneo, compitiendo contra colegios de todo el mundo. Aunque perdieron por poco en las semifinales, nuestros equipos representaron al colegio de manera brillante, y el nivel de fútbol mostrado fue muy alto, destacando la victoria de los chicos contra un equipo de Malta que reunía a algunos de los mejores futbolistas de varios centros escolares de ese país.

Mientras escribo estas líneas, el departamento se está preparando para viajar de nuevo, esta vez a la Mediterranean Cup en Verona (Italia), con equipos de Year 10 y Year 11, por lo que esperamos poder compartir buenas noticias a nuestro regreso.

Solicitudes universitarias

Nuestros alumnos de Year 13 están preparando actualmente sus solicitudes para una amplia variedad de universidades de todo el mundo, incluyendo España, el Reino Unido, los Países Bajos y Estados Unidos, entre otros. Nuestra nueva orientadora universitaria y profesional, Miss Danielle, está trabajando activamente con los estudiantes, guiándolos en la elección de sus destinos y ayudándolos a redactar cartas de motivación eficaces. Es una etapa muy emocionante, especialmente porque cuatro de nuestros alumnos están solicitando plaza en las Universidades de Oxford y Cambridge, así que esperamos recibir muy pronto excelentes noticias y ofertas de admisión.

Show de Navidad

He tenido la suerte de asistir a algunos de los ensayos extraescolares de nuestro próximo espectáculo de Navidad, y realmente está tomando forma. Miss Kate, Mr Tim y su equipo están trabajando sin descanso (incluso organizando sesiones durante los fines de semana) para que sea tan espectacular como siempre. Es un placer ver a estudiantes desde Year 6 hasta Year 13, incluyendo a un buen número de nuestros nuevos alumnos, trabajando juntos y disfrutando plenamente de la experiencia. Cuando volvamos del descanso de mitad de trimestre, daremos más información sobre las entradas y los detalles del evento.

Concurso de talento

Terminaremos este primer trimestre con nuestro Concurso de Talento anual, una magnífica manera de dar la bienvenida a las vacaciones de octubre. Los alumnos mostrarán sus habilidades en canto, interpretación musical y danza ante sus compañeros. Este evento ha sido organizado íntegramente por los estudiantes de Year 12 como parte de sus proyectos del programa IB CAS, por lo que les felicitamos sinceramente por su esfuerzo y dedicación.

Espero que todos disfruten de una semana de descanso maravillosa y que los alumnos puedan tomarse un pequeño respiro antes de la recta final hacia la Navidad. Suelo decir que este es el trimestre en el que se realiza la mayor parte del trabajo duro, y me complace ver que los estudiantes han comenzado el nuevo curso con Positividad, Proactividad y Orgullo.
